Gajah Kalimantan Dinyatakan Terancam Punah oleh IUCN, Ini Faktornya
SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Gajah kalimantan secara resmi diklasifikasikan sebagai hewan yang terancam punah berdasarkan daftar merah Uni Internasional untuk Konservasi Alam (IUCN).
Dikutip dari laman resmi IUCN, populasi gajah ini telah berkurang selama 75 tahun terakhir dan diperkirakan hanya tersisa sekitar 1.000 ekor di alam liar.
IUCN menyampaikan ada beberapa faktor yang memengaruhi berkurangnya populasi ini, seperti penebangan hutan Kalimantan yang menghancurkan sebagian besar habitat mereka serta habitat yang semakin menghilang akibat dijadikan wilayah perkebunan serta pertambangan.
Selain itu, perburuan gading gajah, konsumsi bahan kimia pertanian yang tidak disengaja, dan tabrakan dengan kendaraan juga menjadi faktor berkurangnya populasi gajah kalimantan.
