Robert Francis Prevort dari AS Resmi Jadi Paus Baru: Pilih Nama Paus Leo XIV
SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Kardinal Robert Francis Prevost dari Amerika Serikat (AS) terpilih menjadi Paus baru menggantikan Paus Fransiskus yang meninggal dunia 21 April lalu.
Prevost memilih nama Paus Leo XIV sebagai nama kepausan resminya sekaligus Paus pertama dari Amerika Serikat (AS) dalam dua ribu tahun. Paus Leo XIV sendiri adalah Paus ke-267 dalam sejarah Paus Gereja Katolik.
Berdasar live streaming Vatican News, Prevost terpilih pada konklaf hari kedua atau tepatnya Kamis (8/5/2025) malam WIB. Asap putih mengepul dari cerobong asap Kapel Sistina, tempat konklaf berlangsung.
Konklaf kali ini diikuti oleh 133 kardinal dari sejumlah negara, termasuk Indonesia. Konklaf seperti biasanya berlangsung tertutup di Kapel Sistina.
Para kardinal elektor pun telah disumpah untuk menjaga kerahasiaan selama proses berlangsung. Mereka juga menjalani isolasi agar terhindar dari intervensi asing.
Prevost sendiri lahir di Chicago, Amerika Serikat pada September 1955. Ia adalah Uskup Agung Chicago, yang merupakan Keuskupan Agung terbesar di Amerika Serikat.
