SEAToday.com, Jakarta-Aksi hijau yang diterapkan Masjid Istiqlal menjadi sorotan The New York Times. Hal tersebut tertuang dalam artikel yang dirilis media asing itu bertajuk "What Can 'Green Islam' Achieve in the World's Largest Muslim Country?" pada Rabu, 17 April 2024.

Imam Besar Masjid Istiqlal Nasaruddin Umar menggagas upaya keberlanjutan dengan melengkapi masjid terbesar di Asia Tenggara ini dengan panel surya, keran air yang mengalir lambat, dan sistem daur ulang air. "Perubahan yang menjadikannya tempat ibadah pertama yang memenangkan penghargaan bangunan hijau dari Bank Dunia," demikian tulis The New York Times.

"Kekurangan fatal kita sebagai manusia adalah bahwa kita memperlakukan bumi hanya sebagai objek," kata Imam Besar Nasaruddin Umar. "Semakin serakah kita terhadap alam, semakin cepat pula kiamat tiba."

Dikatakannya bahwa ia hanya mengikuti petunjuk Nabi Muhammad bahwa umat Islam harus peduli terhadap alam. Para ulama terkemuka telah mengeluarkan fatwa, atau maklumat, tentang mengendalikan perubahan iklim.

"Sebagai negara dengan jumlah penduduk Muslim terbesar di dunia, kita harus menjadi contoh yang baik bagi masyarakat Muslim," terang Nasaruddin dalam sebuah wawancara.

Nasaruddin mengatakan bahwa pemasangan 500 panel surya telah menurunkan tagihan listrik masjid sebesar 25 persen. Dengan keran air yang mengalir lambat dan sistem daur ulang air, para jemaah menggunakan lebih sedikit air untuk membersihkan diri sebelum salat.

Masjid ini merupakan tempat ibadah pertama di dunia yang dianugerahi sertifikat bangunan hijau oleh Korporasi Keuangan Internasional Bank Dunia. Imam Besar mengatakan bahwa ia ingin membantu mengubah 70 persen dari 800.000 masjid di Indonesia menjadi "masjid ramah lingkungan," atau masjid ekologis.
