SEAToday.com, Dhaka - Puluhan orang terbunuh di Bangladesh sejak Protes Reformasi Kuota di seluruh negeri semakin memburuk minggu ini. Terdapat berbagai laporan mengenai jumlah korban, dengan hitungan AFP dari laporan RS pada Jumat (19/7) menyebut setinggi 105 korban jiwa.

Pemerintah pada Jumat malam mengumumkan jam malam nasional dan mengerahkan militer untuk menjaga ketertiban setelah beberapa hari bentrokan mematikan. Keputusan tersebut diambil setelah polisi dan pasukan paramiliter dikerahkan di Dhaka, untuk menutup kampus dan membubarkan massa aksi. Layanan internet dan data seluler terganggu pada Kamis malam dan tetap tidak berfungsi keesokan harinya di ibu kota. Pada hari Jumat, polisi melarang semua pertemuan besar di Dhaka dan terlihat menembaki kerumunan pengunjuk rasa.

Para pengunjuk rasa menuntut diakhirinya sistem kuota yang mengalokasikan hingga 30% posisi di pemerintahan untuk keluarga veteran perang kemerdekaan Bangladesh tahun 1971. Mereka berpendapat bahwa sistem ini diskriminatif dan menguntungkan para pendukung PM Sheikh Hasina, dan menuntut agar sistem ini diganti dengan sistem berbasis prestasi.
