SEAToday.com, Seoul - Presiden Korea Selatan Yoon Suk Yeol mengumumkan "darurat militer", Selasa (12/3). Ia menuduh pihak oposisi telah menguasai parlemen, bersimpati pada Korea Utara, dan melumpuhkan pemerintah melalui kegiatan-kegiatan anti negara.
Pengumuman tersebut disampaikan melalui siaran televisi, di mana Presiden Yoon bersumpah untuk "membasmi kekuatan pro-Korea Utara dan melindungi tatanan demokrasi konstitusional".
Hingga kini, masih belum jelas bagaimana keputusan ini akan memengaruhi pemerintahan dan demokrasi di negara tersebut. Namun, langkah ini menuai kritik luas dari kalangan politisi. Pemimpin partai konservatif Yoon sendiri menyebut keputusan tersebut sebagai "kesalahan", sementara pemimpin oposisi Lee Jae-myung menyebut pengumuman tersebut "ilegal dan tidak konstitusional".
Status ini merupakan yang pertama sejak tahun 1987 Korea Selatan menerapkan darurat militer. Keputusan ini juga menyusul meningkatnya ketegangan antara Korea Utara dan Korea Selatan.
