SEAToday.com, New York - Sebanyak 108 mahasiswa ditahan setelah mendirikan kamp unjuk rasa pro Palestina di kawasan Columbia University di New York.

Rektor Columbia University Dr Nemat Shafik menyebutkan telah memberikan otoritas khusus kepada Kepolisian New York untuk menciptakan rasa aman dan damai di lingkungan perkuliahan. Hal ini dilakukan setelah pihak universitas dan mahasiswa tidak dapat menyelesaikan situasi dengan berbagai upaya.

“Para mahasiswa yang mendirikan perkemahan itu melanggar banyak peraturan dan kebijakan. Melalui percakapan langsung dan tertulis, universitas telah memberikan banyak pemberitahuan mengenai pelanggaran ini,” kata Dr Nemat Shafik dikutip dari BBC.

Diketahui dari Walikota New York Eric Adams, terdapat sekitar 50 tenda di lingkungan universitas dan telah bertahan selama lebih dari 30 jam.

Dari total 108 mahasiswa yang ditahan, dua diantaranya mendapat surat panggilan karena dituduh melakukan pelanggaran dengan menghalangi properti pemerintah. Salah satu mahasiswa yang ditahan juga merupakan putri dari seorang politisi Minnesota, Ilhan Omar.

Putri Ilhan Omar mengatakan dirinya telah diskors akibat tergabung dalam pengunjuk rasa yang menggelar kamp di lingkungan kampus melalui unggahan di akun pribadinya di X.

“...Aku telah menerima pemberitahuan bahwa aku adalah 1 dari 3 mahasiswa yang diskors karena menunjukan solidaritas terhadap genosida yang saat ini sedang terjadi di Palestina…” tulisnya.

Tindakan penangkapan massal terhadap mahasiswa ini merupakan yang pertama terjadi setelah protes Perang Vietnam pada tahun 1968 silam, demikian ungkap surat kabar mahasiswa The Columbia Spectator.
