SEAToday.com, Washington-Palestine has officially reapplied for full membership in the United Nations (UN) in a letter sent to UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday (4/2).

According to AFP, Palestinian representative to the UN Riyad Mansour, in a letter sent to António, requested on behalf of the Palestinian leadership that their 2011 application for full membership be reconsidered and reviewed this month.

President Mahmoud Abbas applied for UN membership in 2011, but the UN Security Council deadlocked on the application. Palestine has held observer status since 2012.

To gain council approval, Palestine needs nine votes from the 15 members and no vetoes from the five permanent members. Some European countries, including the UK, France, and Spain, have signaled their consideration of recognizing a Palestinian state. (GHINA/DKD)
