Red-Light Camera Speed Enforcement Function to be Activated Throughout Singapore Starting April 1
SEAToday.com, Singapore-According to the police force, the number of speeding-related fatal accidents in Singapore has spiked by 83.3 percent in 2023, compared to the previous year. The proportion of speeding-related fatal accidents also increased to 25.2 percent in 2023 from 17.3 percent in 2022.
Although the number of speeding violations by camera decreased by 28.6 percent in 2023, police enforcement operations showed increased violations by 22 percent. Additionally, Singapore Traffic Police reported 136 traffic accident fatalities that happened in 2023, with motorcyclist cases accounted half of the numbers.
To remedy the situation, the authority has placed a total of 252 red-light cameras across accident and violation-prone locations in the country. The cameras are hard to miss orange and white painted, next to speed limit warning signs before entering the traffic camera enforcement zones.
Furthermore, the Singapore Traffic Police will also enforce a tougher stance against irresponsible road users, starting with the increase of demerit points for certain traffic offenses to imprisonment.
