At Least 18 Killed in Stampede at New Delhi Railway Station

SEAToday.com, New Delhi - At least 18 people died due to overcrowding at India's New Delhi railway station, local media NDTV reported citing local officials and medics.

“At least 18 people died due to overcrowding on Saturday afternoon at New Delhi railway station,” a local official told NDTV on Saturday (2/15).

Meanwhile, according to the chief doctor of New Delhi's LNJP Hospital, 11 other people were injured in the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi later expressed his condolences over the incident at the New Delhi station. “I offer my condolences to all those who lost their family members and I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” Modi said on social media X.

He also ensured that local officials were on standby “to help all those affected by the stampede.”

The cause of the stampede is still unknown, Delhi fire department director Atul Garg told The Hindu daily.

However, initial reports suggest that the cancellation of two train trips to Prayagraj or Allahabad for the Kumbh Mela pilgrimage rituals resulted in jostling and chaos on two platforms of the station.
