SEAToday.com, Tokyo - Japan held the world's first garbage collection world championship called "SPOGOMI" in Tokyo on Wednesday (11/22). The name "SPOGOMI" itself is a combination of the English word "sport", which means sport, and the Japanese word "gomi", which means garbage.

A total of 21 countries around the world participated in the competition, ranging from the United States to Australia, France, and Indonesia. Each was divided into teams of three. They spent 90 minutes in two sessions cleaning up litter in the Shibuya and Omotesando districts. The winner was determined by the amount and type of trash collected.

The British team won with 9,046.1 points after collecting 57.27 kilograms of garbage. Japan and Italy followed. The second SPOGOMI World Cup will be held in Tokyo in 2025.
