SEAToday.com, Jakarta - At the close of UNESCO's 42nd General Assembly on November 22, 2023, in Paris, France, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay announced the designation of the birthdays of two renowned Indonesian figures, the notable writer A.A. Navis and the female fighter from Aceh, Keumalahayati, as international celebration days. This decision was made during the Plenary Report session of the 42nd UNESCO General Assembly

The determination of commemorations for famous figures in UNESCO member countries follows criteria based on the year of birth or death, relevance to UNESCO's ideals and mission in education, culture, natural sciences, social sciences, humanity, and communication. Proposals consider gender representation, can only be made posthumously, and relate to events of universal or regional significance. Additionally, proposals must be supported by at least two countries, and have a significant impact on the country and the world.
