Pejabat WHO: Wabah Kolera Terkait Erat dengan Perubahan Iklim

SEAToday.com, Jenewa - Pejabat Organisasi Kesehatan Dunia (WHO) Kate O'Brien menyatakan bahwa wabah kolera yang saat ini tengah terjadi di seluruh dunia berkaitan erat dengan perubahan iklim, Selasa (19/3).

Berbicara dalam pertemuan Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) WHO, O'Brien menjelaskan bahwa kolera berkaitan dengan air bersih dan sanitasi yang bersih. Menurutnya, dengan adanya perubahan iklim, peningkatan populasi dan krisis kemanusiaan yang saat ini terjadi di berbagai belahan dunia, imunisasi menjadi sangat penting untuk mencegah penyakit ini.

"Saya pikir kita harus mengakui bahwa wabah kolera yang sedang terjadi saat ini sangat terkait dengan perubahan iklim dalam situasi darurat, situasi konflik, dan kami telah meningkatkan kewaspadaan terhadap kolera," sebut O'Brien.

WHO telah melihat adanya tren peningkatan kasus kolera, sejak peningkatan dua kali lipat antara tahun 2021-2022 dari 223.370 kasus menjadi 472.697 kasus. Pada tahun 2023, total lebih dari 700.000 kasus dilaporkan dengan 5.586 kematian. Sementara itu, pada Februari 2024 WHO telah menerima laporan 37.269 kasus kolera baru dari 20 negara.

WHO, bersama dengan International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision menyerukan tindakan segera untuk mengatasi lonjakan tersebut, melalui respon multisektoral dari negara-negara yang terkena dampak.
