Gajah Korban Jerat Pemburu Liar Melahirkan di Pusat Konservasi Gajah Sebanga Riau

SEAToday.com, Kabupaten Bengkalis-Seekor gajah Sumatra bernama Puja, melahirkan anak pertamanya di Pusat Konservasi Gajah Sebanga Bengkalis, Riau, Sabtu (6/4) malam. Puja adalah gajah Sumatra berusia 20 tahun yang diselamatkan petugas Balai Besar Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BBKASDA) Riau dari jerat pemburu liar tahun 2008 lalu.
“Kita mendapat anugerah dari seekor gajah bernama Puja, gajah hasil evakuasi tahun 2008 di Kampar Kiri, Kabupaten Kampar, karena terjerat sling baja di kaki kanan depan”, ujar PLH Kepala BBKSDA Riau, Andri Hansen.
Bayi gajah yang dilahirkan Puja berjenis kelamin betina dan merupakan hasil perkawinan dengan gajah jantan latih bernama Sarma yang berusia 25 tahun. Dengan berat lahir 75 kilogram, bayi gajah dinyatakan sehat oleh dokter hewan yang menanganinya.
“Bayi gajah ini hasil breeding di Pusat Konservasi Gajah Sebanga. Semoga gajah binaan Balai Besar Konservasi Sumber Data Alam Riau ini terus bertambah,” pungkas Andri.
Dilansir dari laman Dirjen Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam dan Ekosistem, gajah Sumatra adalah subspecies dari gajah Asia yang hanya berhabitat di Sumatra. Posturnya lebih kecil disbanding subspecies gajah India. Namun, populasinya terancam akibat makin berkurangnya habitat alami mereka dan konflik dengan manusia.
