Ancaman Botswana untuk Kirim 20 Ribu Gajah ke Jerman

SEAToday.com, Jakarta-Presiden Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi mengancam untuk mengirim 20.000 gajah ke Jerman dalam sebuah perselisihan mengenai perburuan. Masisi menyebut kepada media Jerman bahwa hal ini hanya akan memiskinkan masyarakat di negaranya.

Dilansir BBC, ia mengatakan bahwa jumlah gajah telah melonjak sebagai hasil dari upaya konservasi. Menurutnya, perburuan membantu menjaga jumlah gajah tetap terkendali.

"Jerman harus hidup bersama dengan hewan-hewan itu, seperti yang Anda katakan," kata Masisi kepada surat kabar Jerman, Bild. "Ini bukan lelucon."

Botswana adalah rumah bagi sekitar sepertiga populasi gajah dunia, yakni lebih dari 130.000 ekor. Jumlah tersebut lebih banyak dari ruang yang tersedia.

Kawanan gajah menyebabkan kerusakan pada properti, memakan tanaman dan menginjak-injak penduduk, kata Masisi. Botswana sebelumnya telah memberikan 8.000 gajah kepada negara tetangga Angola, dan telah menawarkan ratusan gajah lainnya kepada Mozambik, sebagai cara untuk menurunkan populasi.

"Kami ingin menawarkan hadiah seperti itu kepada Jerman," kata Masisi, seraya menambahkan bahwa ia tidak akan menerima jawaban tidak.
