MethaneSAT, Satelit Pelacak Mentana Pertama Diluncurkan ke Orbit
SEAToday.com, Santa Barbara County - Roket Falcon 9 milik SpaceX pada Senin (4/3) berhasil meluncurkan MethaneSAT, satelit perintis pelacak emisi gas metana dari perusahaan-perusahaan minyak dan gas di seluruh dunia.
MethaneSAT bertujuan untuk menemukan titik-titik panas dan kebocoran metana dari 300 target di seluruh dunia dengan mengitari bumi sebanyak 15 kali dalam sehari. Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), yang mengembangkan satelit ini, telah bermitra dengan Google untuk membuat peta metana pertama mereka pada akhir tahun ini. Wakil Presiden Senior EDF Energy Transition Mark Brownstein mengatakan bahwa data tersebut akan membantu meminta pertanggungjawaban negara dan perusahaan atas polusi metana mereka.
Metana adalah salah satu penyebab utama perubahan iklim. Setelah dilepaskan ke atmosfer, metana berperilaku seperti selimut, menyerap panas dan mengurangi jumlah panas yang terlepas ke angkasa. Metana juga memerangkap panas lebih dari 28 kali lebih banyak daripada karbon dioksida.
