Public Security Minister To Lam Elected as Vietnam's President
SEAToday.com, Hanoi - The Vietnam’s National Assembly on Wednesday (5/22) elected Public Security Minister To Lam to be the country’s next president. Lam was elected after a unanimous vote where 472 out of 473 deputies voted in favor of his nomination.
Lam’s election came after his predecessor, Vo Van Thuong, resigned in March amid an ongoing anti-corruption campaign that has shaken the country’s political establishment and business elites. Changes on multiple top-level officials had also occurred following the campaign.
In the crackdown, Lam played a central role, as the deputy head of the steering committee on anti corruption. For that, the Assembly deemed him the only candidate to become the country’s president.
Following his election, Lam promised to try his best to fulfill the task. He also said that he would “resolutely and persistently continue the fight against corruption”.
