Weather Alert: Thunderstorms Expected Across Major Cities in Indonesia
SEAToday.com, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecasted thunderstorms and heavy rain for most major cities across the country on Tuesday, (11/5/2024). Citizens are advised to take precautions as severe weather conditions are expected in multiple regions.
Light rain with an intensity below 2.5 mm per hour is predicted to affect several cities, including Banda Aceh, Padang, Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Jakarta, Serang, Yogyakarta, Pontianak, and Samarinda. Hasalika Nurjanah, a meteorologist at BMKG, shared these projections in a press release, warning of the varying intensity across the country.
In some areas, more severe weather is anticipated. "Heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm per hour is likely in Mamuju, where temperatures will range between 20-28 degrees Celsius," said Hasalika. Additionally, thunderstorms are expected in cities such as Medan, Jambi, Bengkulu, Palembang, Lampung, Pangkal Pinang, and Bandung, creating challenging conditions for residents and commuters.
On the other hand, regions like Semarang, Surabaya, Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, and Makassar are forecasted to experience mostly cloudy or foggy conditions, with temperatures ranging between 25-30 degrees Celsius throughout the day.
The BMKG also observed Tropical Cyclone Yinxing over the Philippine Sea, influencing wind speeds of over 25 knots. This cyclone is expected to enhance cloud formation along the convergence zone, increasing the likelihood of rain in nearby areas.
Residents along coastal regions, including Bandar Lampung, Banten, northern Jakarta, Surabaya, and Balikpapan, should be alert to potential tidal flooding due to the intense weather pattern forecasted for (11/5).
